Is it really necessary to buy an extended warranty coverage for your car?

I have recently bought a 2008 Dodge Avenger with Basic warranty period still good until May of 2010, and a current mileage of 32,508.

Keep this in mind. Your Avenger warranty will only go until the odometer reaches 36,000 miles or the listed date, whichever comes first. If you bought this Avenger used, the lifetime powertrain warranty does not apply, that only goes to the original owner. I work in a service department for Dodge, I see extended warranties work every single day. Are there going to be items here and there that are not covered by a warranty you purchase? Yes. However, I guarantee you this, if you have a breakdown after 36,000 miles and you do not have extended warranty, you will wish you had bought one. The thought that warranties are a scheme to get in your pocket is garbage. Most warranties do not have a cap limit, meaning they often will pay for repairs in extent of what you paid for the warranty itself. Also, if you never have a breakdown, you can usually get a pro-ration on the warranty, meaning you can possibly get some of that money back if the warranty is never used. I recommend you purchase one. If your car never breaks, awesome. If it does (and may very well because there are lots of moving and electric parts) you will want one, trust me. I don’t see a lot of Avengers having problems, but they can break down just like every other car out there.
I wouldn’t. Most cars are fairly dependable, and if you do your research (IE, Consumer Reports and others) you can find which cars have better than average dependability. Extended warranty coverage is almost always just another way for the dealer to harvest some more money from you. Paint sealers and upholstery protectors are 2 others.
If it’s factory then yes I would. If it’s a private warranty..forget it, they all suck
yea extended warranty is another Gimmick used by dealerships to milk your wallet.
Aftermarket or extended warranties are a rip off, and not needed.
I’ve been in the auto repair industry for 8 years servicing up to 45 cars a day. In that time I have come across only 1 customer who got their monies worth out of an extended warranty.
Skip it.
On the other hand for a Dodge Avenger an extended warranty might actually pay for itself. Not exactly a durable machine. On most cars though it definately will not.
